2022 Gnome Forest

This page is for gnome & related patterns for the 2022 Festival of Trees.

For 2022 the area under the tree will be a woodland forest populated by Nisses, Tomten and Gnomes. Along with these elfin folk, we can have a few woodland creatures. And of course there needs to be trees!

We are targeting gnomes to be roughly 4 inches tall or smaller (even down to 1 inch). The trees can be nominally 6 inches tall, but they can range from few to 8 inches tall.

In addition, related ornaments for the 6 foot tree can be owls and miniature gnome houses. Other ornaments can include any appropriate Christmas tree decoration.

The patterns and photos shown here come from a variety of sources – books, magazines and the web. Some of them are just photos from a single angle, some are have cutout patterns with photos and some are multi page tutorials. (The single photos can be used to not only give you shapes, but also with ideas for coloring as well as extra details and decorations.)

There are many nice pictures on Pinterest. Most of these links have just a single good photo and no instructions, but they can help with ideas for details and colors.

Carving junkies has an extensive set of pages on the web. They have a number of instructions about Flat Plane Carving as well as related topics like painting and sharpening. Below are links to a number of their very detailed tutorials (including videos) for gnomes and other designs. Caution: These patterns are not the best, for example the raccoon face looks more like a bear and it is missing the stripes on the tail.

Trees in bark

There do not seem to be many patterns for carving a tree shape except for using bark. Maybe it is because people know what trees look like. I did find a pinterest page that has lots of photos of carved trees. (The link to it claimed 76.)
